Classroom Volunteer Roles

Are there specific duties on a committee where you can help? Volunteering with LLIR is a rewarding way to meet new friends and to help ensure classes run smoothly. Click each of the main volunteer roles listed below to see their responsibilities and time commitments.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the Course Chair (a Board member) in running the course
  • Assists the Course Director (instructor) as needed
  • Stays aware of emergency procedures
  • Fills in for the Chair if absent

Time Commitment

  • Attend the planning/orientation meeting before the term begins
  • Attend all or most classes during the term
  • Arrive 60 minutes before the class starts

Responsibilities

  • Operates classroom technology to support instructor
  • Manage podium controls, display slides and videos
  • Control audio and lighting for audience comfort
  • Display class announcements

Time Commitment

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before class begins
  • AV duties are rotated among team members

Training is provided for new AV Operators. Only basic computer skills are required

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a substitute for the Chair or Co-chair when required
  • May rotate duties with the Co-chair or simply be available as backup

Time Commitment

  • Attend the planning/orientation meeting before the term begins
  • Attend all classes unless unable
  • Arrive 60 minutes before the class is filing in

Responsibilities

  • Arrive early as requested
  • Provide a friendly welcome at the entrance of the classroom
  • Distribute individual name tags and request that emergency information be written on the back of the tag
  • Remind members to wear name tags for each class
  • Ensure Glendon campus protocols are followed (drinks allowed, food not allowed)

Time Commitment

  • Serve for five weeks (half the course length)
  • Arrive 60 minutes before class
  • Two greeters per class minimum

Responsibilities

  • Express appreciation to the instructor on behalf of the class by preparing and delivering brief remarks at the end of the lecture series

Time Commitment

  • Prepare a few words that take 2 or 3 minutes to say and speak at the end of class

General Notes

  • Training is provided for all roles as needed.
  • Masks are optional in lecture halls, and members may choose to wear one.
  • Everyone benefits from volunteer participation, helping LLIR classes run smoothly and effectively.
